Abstract:
Sixty seven letters received bewteen 1865 and 1871 by Henry Hastings & Company, Boston ship owners and shipping agents. A
number of famous clipper ships are mentioned in the correspondence, including Invincible, Charger, Electric Spark, Nightingale,
Messenger, Nonantum, Witch of the Wave, Ella Norton, White Swallow, Grace Darling, and others. The letters document the formation
and financing of clipper ship voyages to San Francisco, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore, Canton, Bombay, Calcutta and other
far eastern ports. The letters include very specific mention of prices current for various products and commodities, as well
as strategies for marketing these products and commodities. Major themes in the correspondence include the decline and bankruptcy
of Charles Brooks and Company, the difficulties encountered by the ship Invincible in 1866, and piracy and murder aboard the
ship Lubra.
